The Church of Christ—Not A Denomination
The church of Christ: You’ve probably heard of churches of Christ. Perhaps you’ve asked the question, “Who are these people?” “What distinguishes them from the hundreds of other churches in the world?” Members of churches of Christ are people of a restoration spirit. By this I mean that it is our earnest desire (our aim and goal) to restore the original New Testament church.
The apostle Paul prophesied that the days were coming when there would be a great falling away from the faith (2nd Thessalonians 2.1-12). He told of men that would not be desire the truth (“sound doctrine”) but instead would accumulate unto themselves teachers to suit their own passions (2 Timothy 4.3). The denominationalism that we see today is a remnant of the apostasy, which Paul, by the power of the Holy Spirit, spoke of. In the late Part of the 18th century men of different denominations, studying in different parts of the world, independent of each other, began to ask:
· Why not go back beyond denominationalism to the simplicity of
the word and the purity of first century Christianity?
· Why not take the bible alone and once again continue “steadfastly
in the apostles teachings…” (Acts 2.42)?
· Why not plant the same seed that first century Christians planted
and be Christians only (Luke 8.11)?
They believed that we should throw off denominationalism and human creeds and to follow the word of God alone. Nothing should be required of people as acts of faith except for that which is apparent through scripture.
In like manner we too believe that the bible should be our only rule and guide for life. We believe that this is the only way to achieve the unity that Christ prayed to the Father for (John 17.20,21): the unity that should be characteristic of his followers. Unless we, as his followers, adhere the standard of his truth (“thy word is truth” John 17.17) that unity can never be achieved.
We do not have the right to asks for men’s allegiance to human organizations but we do have the right to call upon men follow the divine map that leads to eternal life. Therefore, “we speak where the bible speaks and we remain silent were the bible is silent.” We call upon anyone who would disagree to demonstrate to us were this method of obedience is misguided.
